Unforgettable Sushi and Wine Experience at Blackbird Vineyard
For my boyfriend's birthday this year I wanted to plan something special. A few months back I had picked up some riders while driving for Uber from the Riverhouse by Bespoke Collection. They raved about their experience at Blackbird Vineyards tasting room, and proceeded to tell me they had a sushi lunch with their wine tasting...WHAT?! How had I never heard of this?! After returning home and conducting an investigation I found that indeed, this was a thing. A kind of expensive thing. However, my boyfriend is almost impossible to surprise, so I had to do something kind of big.
I contacted Blackbird after months of contemplation and to my pleasure they were more than helpful as well as extremely friendly! I had been put through to about 3 different employees within the company by the time all questions were answered and then to book. Sometimes in tasting rooms no one really knows what is going on and you have to explain what you want over and over again...annoying. Not at Blackbird! Everyone knew exactly who I was, what was going on with my special local Napa deal, that I didn't have any food allergies, ect. Basically they had their shit together.
What the "Bento Box and Wine" offer is, is a wine tasting along side a Bento box lunch from Morimoto which is located next door. This includes a flight of 5 wines (plus a sip of welcome Rose while you peek around the awesome art gallery) and of course the bento box lunch. The wine tasting started with a Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend (great for the sushi), then moved to reds which were heavily Merlot influenced. Blackbird owns a bunch of Merlot vines which are growing in some pretty prime "Merlot" conditions up off of Big Ranch Road in Napa. Think "cool clay" soil and hot days with cool nights. Our bento box included tempera vegetables, a house salad, chef selected sushi (sake & hamachi nigiri and a spicy tuna roll) and the most delicious teriyaki beef I have ever had. They pour all 5 wines before you sit down, come by and explain all of them to you/address any questions all while lunch is being delivered and set up. Then they leave you to enjoy the experience without interruption. They are of course around the tasting room, should any questions or needs arise.
It was all so excellent. The wine was phenomenal, the food was amazing and fresh. The tasting room is as unique and fun as the experience, plus the riverfront view is beautiful. Again, the staff was great. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone local or from out of town, as it is not a common tasting you find here in the Valley. Side note to local Napkins; They offer a Napa Neighbors 2 for 1 tasting on weekdays. Their hands are understandably tied when it comes to the lunch price, but 2 for 1 tasting brings down the price a lot ($55 less!)
