Truckee River Winery, Fun for the Wino of the Woods
Truckee is a town in Northern California tucked into the mountains near Lake Tahoe. This town , just a 2 1/2 hour drive northeast of Napa, holds a near and dear place in my heart. Not only was it my family's favorite vacation spot growing up, but it also is my boyfriends hometown. In the summer for they past two years we spend most of our time in Truckee, while only a few nights a month in Napa. Apart from the boating, paddle boarding, hiking and many other outdoorsy activities Truckee has to offer, one of our favorite places to go during the warmer months, is Truckee River Winery.
Truckee River Winery offers wine in tastings, by the glass, or full bottles for purchase. They also offer craft beer, and a nice food menu. Most know for their Santa Lucia Highland Pinot Noir, they offer a decent Zinfandel and a pretty good Malbec. They have been awarded a few awards from the San Francisco chronicle and have a very loyal Truckee following. Most of their whites and rose come from Lodi, which I found fall a little flat on the flavor scale. Once you get into their reds however, taste and body significantly improves. I would describe their wine if anything as decent "Wednesday Wine", or "porch pounders".(with exception to the Malbec which does have some tannins and body. But the others, yea, porch pounders.)
The ironically great thing about producing a porch pounder aside from it being an affordable, decent wine, is the fact that TRW kind of has the vibe of a place I would want to pound some wine. They provide 5 bocce ball courts that are free to use and have a bocce league that I'm really jealous I can't join. They have lots of outdoor seating and bbq's which in the summer months is a must. They are super dog friendly, inside and outside of the winery. They offer small bites such as tapas and cheese plates along with a panini/ deli sandwich list. It's casual atmosphere is refreshing, especially for a girl from Napa where if you go wine tasting you better look cute or feel VERY out of place. If I want to be dressed up, cool, if I want to go in a baseball cap, no make up and cut offs, cool. I don't go to to TRW looking for the next best thing in wine, becasue simply they can't offer it. However I do look to it for a great day outside, sipping some halfway decent wine and eating some good simple food while socializing with really down to earth, chill people. Basically TRW is a place i want to hang out.
Side note, they have a sweet variety of random trinkets inside from smores' kits to wine glass decorations to pool floaty drink holders. I want all of it.
Keep doing you Truckee River Winery, I'll be back.
